President of the Republic of Iraq Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid praised the Vatican’s role in supporting Iraq's security and stability through messages advocating tolerance and peaceful coexistence. He made these remarks during a meeting with Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq Monsignor Mitja Leskovar on Wednesday, at Baghdad Palace.

President Rashid expressed his firm belief that continued cooperation with the Holy See is vital to enhancing Iraq’s culture of coexistence, as well as strengthening the foundations of peace in the region and throughout the world.

On 18 November, the President and First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed traveled to the Holy See for a meeting with His Holiness Pope Francis. Referencing the visit, President Rashid conveyed once again his gratitude to His Holiness the Pope for his gracious hospitality and for the welcoming reception. He also expressed his appreciation for the concern shown by the Holy Father for the people of Iraq.

The Apostolic Nuncio acknowledged His Excellency's efforts to establish peaceful coexistence and cooperation among all communities in Iraq and commended his care and concern for the Christian population in Iraq as well as his desire for the return of internally displaced persons (IDP) to their homes.
