On October 9, 2023, the Leadership Council of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) convened a meeting, presided over by PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani.
After the conclusion of the meeting, the Leadership Council of the PUK proceeded to select 14 individuals to serve as members of the party's Political Bureau. Additionally, five backup members of the Political Bureau were elected, along with the appointment of the party's spokesperson. Furthermore, Dr. Khasraw Gull Muhammed was appointed as the representative of the PUK President. He will be participating in the meetings of the Leadership Council, the Supreme Interest Council and the Support Council.
The Leadership Council's message following the meeting read:
Following the conclusion of the 5th Congress, the PUK's new Leadership Council convened on October 8-9, 2023, in the Leadership meeting hall in Sulaymaniyah, under the supervision of PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani.
The meeting commenced with a moment of silence to honor the souls of the martyrs of the Kurdistan People's Liberation Movement and the Democratic Movement in Iraq, especially the soul of President Mam Jalal who passed away six years ago and entrusted Kurdistan, Iraq and the PUK to his comrades.
The PUK President emphasized two essential aspects of PUK policy: serving the people of Kurdistan and prioritizing their salaries, lives, and welfare in the process, and the strategic principle of our people's national and constitutional rights in Iraq. He stated that both of these demands will be met by implementing a Kurdish and Iraqi policy that calls for genuine unity, significant reform and correction of governance in Kurdistan and Baghdad through alliance, partnership, balance, and making the capital the strategic focus of our political, democratic, and constitutional struggle. The leadership meeting stressed the importance of strengthening Kurdish and Iraqi relations with other forces and parties in order to complete mutual national responsibilities.
President Bafel Jalal Talabani further highlighted that the next provincial council elections and Kurdistan Parliament elections pose two significant challenges for the new leadership and members of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). These challenges necessitate the implementation of an acceptable democratic framework. He stated: "Both responsibilities should not cause us to forget to defend the financial rights of our beloved people, which should never be mixed with political conflicts, both between the region (Kurdistan region) and Baghdad, as well as within Kurdistan, because the livelihood of the people is a red line for us and we will never give it up."
The two leadership meetings in-depth examined the new organizational structure of the PUK's organizational work, selected a new Political Bureau, and established the responsibilities of the bureaus and organs in accordance with the new regulations.
The meeting decided to publish the documents approved by the congress, the by-law, programs and political reports and present them to the bodies and public opinion.
The discussions concluded with a resolute camaraderie and a collective aspiration to foster reconciliation among comrades operating at various tiers of the struggle. President Bafel issued a directive urging all PUK members to assume the new national and party responsibilities in the ongoing struggle, with the aim of serving the Kurdish populace, who constitute the primary source of the PUK's vitality and resilience.
