Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid greeted Fr. Charles Lwanga Ssuuna, Charge d'Affaires of the Vatican State Embassy in Iraq, at the Baghdad Palace on Monday, July 17, 2023.
The Iraqi President explained why Republican Decree No. (147) of 2013 was withdrawn and confirmed that doing so would not jeopardize Cardinal Louis Raphael I Sako's religious or legal status, as he was appointed by the Apostolic See as Patriarch of the Chaldean Church in Iraq and the world.
President Rashid stated that the decree was withdrawn to address a constitutional situation, as the previous decree was issued without a constitutional or legal basis. Additionally, the heads of various churches and sects have requested the issuance of similar Republican decrees, further prompting the reconsideration of the initial decree.
Furthermore, he reemphasized the Presidency's respect and gratitude for Patriarch Louis Sako's leadership of the Chaldean Church in Iraq and around the world.
Fr. Charles Lwanga Ssuuna, the Chargé d'Affaires of the Vatican State's Embassy in Baghdad, confirmed that the embassy had no notes on the Presidency's proceedings.
