A Kurdish judge has been appointed chairman of the Iraqi Independent High Election Commission (IHEC).

Judge Omar Ahmed and Judge Fayath Yasin Hussein were chosen to serve as the council's chairman and vice chairman, respectively, at the IHEC meeting today. by a unanimous decision of the members present.

Judge Omar Ahmed, the council's deputy chairman, presided over the proceedings after Judge Jalil Adnan Khalaf resigned as chairman. Ahmed was elected today to take up the role of council chairman.

The IHEC consists of nine members, two are Kurds from the Kurdistan Region. They are appointed by the Supreme Judicial Council and serve four-year terms that cannot be extended.
