Kurdish woman has been making tandoor for 50 years and is still continuing

Shireen Osman, resident of Shorish sub-district of Chamchamal district in Sulaymaniyah governorate, have been making Tandoor for 50 years and is still continuing.

 

A tandoor also known as tannour is a cylindrical clay or metal oven used in cooking and baking. The tandoor is used for cooking in Southern, Central, and Western Asia, as well as in the South Caucasus.

 

Shireen loves her job and says that she has had passion for making tandoor ever since she was a child. She also says that she has been able to provide livelihood and needs for her family with this job.

 

Shireen told PUKmedia: " I have been making tandoor for 50 years in Chamchamal and the outskirts of Garmian region and I have been able to make financial benefits from it.. with my job, I have been able to support my spouse and children in making their living."

 

She uses her house as her factory and says that tandoor is made in many stages: "There is a certain clay, which exist on the Sulaymaniyah road, they get me that clay and I mix it with water and salt until it forms a paste and then I let it sit under nylons for 4 days until the paste becomes firm, then we start making the tandoor." 

 

"Now that we are in winter, it takes me 2-3 days to finish a tandoor, but in summer I can make many tandoors in only half a day."

 

Shireen indicted that demands over tandoor have increased recently and that many people visit her daily to get tandoors for their homes.

 

She pointed out that she even gets order from other cities of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, especially from Erbil, Duhok, Sharazwr and mid and southern Iraq.

 

Shireen thanked her spouse and said that he supported her and that he has always been a reason behind her success.
