US President Donald Trump has said Washington is close to reaching a favourable agreement with Iran, stressing that US forces would withdraw from the region once the Strait of Hormuz is reopened and the nuclear issue is resolved.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Trump described a diplomatic settlement as the preferred option, arguing that an agreement would lead to the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping. He stated that the waterway should be reopened without transit charges and that Iran must be permanently prevented from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Trump claimed that the United States was prevailing in its confrontation with Iran, describing the current situation as a complete American victory. He reiterated that his primary objective remains ensuring that Tehran does not acquire nuclear weapons, adding that Iranian officials had already agreed not to develop or obtain such capabilities.

Trump said Iran was in a weak position and claimed its military capabilities had been severely degraded. While acknowledging that Iranian negotiators were highly skilled and that discussions would take time, he maintained that Washington was steadily securing its objectives. He warned that if negotiations failed to deliver the desired outcome, the conflict could take a different course.

Trump further asserted that the United States had targeted Iranian leadership figures on several occasions and claimed that those remaining had become more pragmatic. He suggested that recent developments could amount to regime change and reiterated his belief that Iran would ultimately be forced to concede.

Meanwhile, Axios cited a US official as saying that Trump’s latest demands had prompted a fresh round of exchanges between Washington and Tehran. The official said an agreement was expected but noted that the timing of its conclusion remained uncertain.

Amendments to the Nuclear Agreement

US sources have revealed that President Trump has requested amendments to a draft agreement negotiated by his envoys and Iranian officials, triggering another round of talks that could continue for several days.

According to Axios, Trump remains committed to securing a deal and expects it to be finalised in the near future. However, he is seeking stronger provisions concerning Iran’s nuclear programme before granting final approval.

Sources said the proposed changes focus primarily on arrangements for Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, including the transfer of nuclear materials and the timetable for related procedures.

Trump has also requested revisions to sections dealing with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as both sides continue to exchange comments on the latest draft.

The current proposal includes an Iranian commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons and a 60-day period for negotiating the finer details of Tehran’s nuclear programme, alongside measures aimed at easing US sanctions.

Iranian media outlets have maintained that no final agreement has yet been reached, despite reports that negotiations are approaching their concluding stages. Speculation regarding the possible release of some frozen Iranian assets has also emerged, although the White House has denied such reports.

A senior US official said Washington expects a response from Tehran in the coming days and remains prepared to continue negotiations until Trump’s conditions are satisfied. The latest developments underline ongoing differences over both technical and political aspects of the proposed agreement, despite both sides reporting progress towards a potential resolution of one of the Middle East’s most complex disputes.
