The war between Russia and Ukraine.
Russia experienced a turbulent day on Friday, May 22, as the war in Ukraine continued to escalate, with reports of drone attacks, military warnings, and rising regional tensions.
Russian authorities said more than 200 drones were intercepted overnight across several regions, including areas near Moscow and the Yaroslavl region. The attacks were among the largest reported waves of drone activity in recent weeks and highlighted Ukraine’s continued use of long-range strike capabilities.
One of the most significant incidents involved an oil refinery in Russia’s Yaroslavl region, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said had been targeted as part of Kyiv’s efforts to weaken Russia’s military and economic infrastructure. Ukrainian officials have described such strikes as aimed at increasing pressure on Russia by bringing the impact of the war deeper into its territory.
Meanwhile, authorities in Russian-controlled Luhansk said a drone strike hit a dormitory building linked to an educational institution, with reports claiming at least four people were killed and dozens injured, including civilians. Ukraine has not officially commented on the incident.
The developments come amid continued concerns over the wider course of the conflict. Ukrainian officials have claimed Russian forces have suffered significant losses since the start of 2026, while independent verification of battlefield figures remains limited. Analysts say Russia continues to rely heavily on recruitment efforts to sustain its military operations.
Beyond the battlefield, tensions between Russia and NATO countries remain elevated. Western officials have expressed concern over increased military activity near the Baltic region, warning that repeated drone incidents and military manoeuvres could contribute to further instability in Europe. Russia and Belarus also recently completed joint nuclear exercises, adding to ongoing security concerns.
