Trump Arrives in Beijing.

The US China

US President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday ahead of a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, with discussions expected to cover a range of sensitive issues, including global trade, tensions surrounding Iran, and the Taiwan question.

Air Force One touched down at around 7:50 pm local time (11:50 GMT), marking the first visit by a sitting US president to China since Trump’s own trip during his first term in November 2017.

Highlighting Trump’s emphasis on trade and business ties during the visit, Jensen Huang accompanied him aboard Air Force One during a stop in Alaska. Elon Musk was also among those travelling with the president.

China remains barred from purchasing Nvidia’s most advanced semiconductor chips, which are vital for artificial intelligence development, under US export controls that Washington says are intended to safeguard national security.

Several other American business leaders, including Tim Cook, also joined the delegation accompanying Trump.

However, Trump’s efforts to strengthen trade ties between the world’s two largest economies come amid ongoing political friction over Taiwan and the conflict involving Iran, which, according to AFP, resulted in the postponement of the trip originally planned for March.

Ahead of Trump’s arrival, China struck a conciliatory tone. Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiajun told reporters during a press briefing that “China is prepared to work with the United States to broaden cooperation and properly manage differences.”
