U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held separate telephone conversations on Monday with his Australian and British counterparts to discuss developments related to Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. State Department said.

According to separate statements issued by the State Department following Rubio’s calls with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, the discussions focused on “Iran and ongoing efforts to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”

The conflict involving Iran has effectively led to the closure of the strategic waterway, causing what has been described as the largest disruption to global energy markets in history. Before the conflict, approximately 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed through the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that the ceasefire with Iran, reached more than a month ago, was now “on life support”.
