Ali al-Zaidi, the Coordination Framework's the nominee for the country's premiership.
Iraq's Coordination Framework held an meeting on Monday at the Government Palace in Baghdad, during which the member parties agreed and nominated Ali al-Zaidi for the country's premiership.
According to a statement by the Coordination Framework, the member party leaders commended the performance of the government led by Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani over the past three and a half years. They praised what they described as its responsible and patriotic handling of economic, regional and international challenges, as well as its achievements in implementing the government programme, particularly in the field of development and in restoring public confidence in the political and electoral system, as reflected in the broad participation seen in the recent parliamentary elections.
The Coordination Framework also praised the positions taken by Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition, and Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, leader of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, in withdrawing their candidacies for the premiership and the formation of the next government. The statement said the move reflected a commitment to the supreme national interest, helped to overcome the political deadlock, and enabled the Framework to select a candidate suited to the requairements and challenges of the current stage.
After the nomination, Iraqi President Nizar Amedi assigned al-Zaidi to form the next Iraqi government.
"Based on our constitutional responsibilities, we have tasked the candidate of the largest parliamentary bloc, Ali Al-Zaidi, with forming the new government. In doing so, we have completed the third stage of the constitutional process, which could not be delayed," President Amedi said in a post on X.
"We wish him success in forming a strong national government that represents all Iraqis and meets their aspirations. We also call upon all political forces to support and cooperate with him in order to expedite the completion of this constitutional and national responsibility in a manner that serves the interests of Iraq and its people."
Al-Zaidi pledged to confront the internal and external challenges facing Iraq, stating that his government programme would focus on improving public services and social welfare.
In a public address, he said: “I would like to begin by thanking the leaders of the Coordination Framework for nominating me for the position of Prime Minister of Iraq. I assure our noble people that confronting the internal and external challenges surrounding us is among our highest priorities. Iraq’s human and natural resources provide an opportunity for governance within the framework of a strong, economically prosperous and socially thriving nation.”
He added that the forthcoming government programme would build upon previous efforts to improve public services and social welfare, while setting priorities based on risk assessment and the effective use of opportunities, so that Iraq may become a balanced state regionally and internationally.
