The Kurdistan Commando Forces have carried out a joint security operation in the Garmian region, destroying a number of terrorist hideouts.

In a statement received by PUKMEDIA, the Commando Forces said: “On Monday, the Commando Forces, in cooperation with the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Forces in Diyala Governorate, carried out a joint security operation to sweep the areas of al-Duraji and Qori Chay in the Garmian region.”

According to the statement, the operation resulted in the destruction of a number of terrorist hideouts and logistical supplies, as well as the disposal of various types of ammunition.

In 2014, IS seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, declaring a so-called “caliphate” with the northern Iraqi city of Mosul as its de facto capital.

The group’s territorial control ended in Iraq in 2017, following operations by Iraqi and Kurdish forces, backed by a US-led international coalition. IS was finally defeated in Syria two years later.

Despite the defeat, IS sleeper cells and hit-and-run attacks have continued to pose security threats in the country.
