The Day President Mam Jalal Was Elected President of the Republic.
In a statement marking a historic milestone in Iraq’s political history, Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), has paid tribute to President Mam Jalal, recalling his election as the country’s first Kurdish President as a defining moment for both the Kurdish liberation movement and Iraq’s democratic transition, while reaffirming the PUK’s commitment to his legacy of dialogue, unity, and national partnership.
The following is PUK President's message:
Today, we remember with pride and respect a significant chapter in the history of the Kurdish liberation movement, when the Peshmerga and the leader of the new revolution, President Mam Jalal, became the first Kurd elected as President of the Republic of Iraq, and the first president to secure the confidence of the people through a democratic process.
We in the PUK continue to uphold the valuable legacy of President Mam Jalal, following his political path and working in line with his approach to build a more prosperous country, strengthen brotherhood, and consolidate peace among all sides.
On this occasion, we reaffirm our readiness to cooperate with any individual or party that believes in dialogue and understanding, with the aim of achieving peace, unity, reconstruction, and service to our dear citizens.
