Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Issues Message on the 46th Anniversary of the Genocide of the Fayli Kurds

The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has issued a message marking the 46th anniversary of the genocide of the Feyli Kurds, highlighting that the Feyli Kurds have played a significant and active role in all stages of the Kurdish national revolution and in Iraq’s broader democratic struggle, and have long been regarded as symbols of loyalty and bravery.

The Political Bureau's message read:

“Today we commemorate another painful anniversary in the history of our people—a historical crime committed against an indigenous component of our nation, the Feyli Kurds, at various stages. On 4 April 1980, the systematic forced deportation, deprivation of identity, and expulsion across borders reached the height of genocide.

The Feyli Kurds played a major and active role in all stages of the Kurdish revolution, the national struggle, and Iraq’s democratic process, standing as examples of loyalty and bravery. Through this crime, they were uprooted from their homeland and deprived of their citizenship rights, political and social status, and lawful property.

This authentic community of our people, which sacrificed dozens of leaders and hundreds of fighters for Kurdish rights and democracy, was not only subjected to deportation and deprivation during the Ba’ath regime, but also to mass killings on a significant scale due to their Kurdish identity and Shia religious affiliation.

Although, following the fall of the Ba’ath regime, the Iraqi High Criminal Court recognised the Feyli case as genocide, many practical steps remain for the Iraqi government to restore identity and provide compensation to the Feyli people.

The PUK, as always, remains committed to the realisation of these rights and will continue its political struggle for transitional justice and constitutional rights within federal Iraq, ensuring inclusion of the Feyli Kurds and ending this long-standing historical injustice.

We extend our greetings to the souls of the victims of the Feyli genocide and to the Feyli martyrs who fell in the ranks of the Kurdish movement and Iraq’s democratic process.”
