The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has issued a statement, marking the 38th anniversary of the Halabja chemical attack and genocide, reaffirming its continued dedication to serving Halabja and its citizens.
The statement reads:
"The 38th anniversary of the chemical attack and genocide in Halabja is a solemn memory and a profound national wound. It recalls the unprecedented crime committed by the Ba’ath regime against this city and its people—a wound that remains unhealed and will undoubtably continue to affect the nation until Halabja’s full rights are recognised.
This year, as we mark the anniversary, Halabja stands officially as the fourth province of the Kurdistan Region and the nineteenth province of the Federal Republic of Iraq thanks to efforts of the devoted ones. It is the duty of all of us to dedicate our efforts to building a prosperous and dignified Halabja, ensuring its financial rights and entitlements as a province within Iraq’s general budget. This will consolidate and sustain the services provided to the city by the party and the government since the 1991 uprising, while further enhancing efforts to serve its citizens.
We once again pay tribute to the souls of the 5,000 martyrs of Sharazur. To the families of the victims and to the enduring memory of Halabja’s martyrs, we reaffirm our duty to heed their cries and pursue their legitimate demands.
Halabja remains an open wound of the nation—a wound that will always be remembered and never forgotten."
