Manish Rai, Australian Author and geopolitical analyst.
Manish Rai, an Australian geopolitical analyst and columnist, has praised the Peshmerga forces as a highly effective and reliable military organisation, capable of protecting both Kurdistan and Iraq. Writing in his latest opinion piece, Rai reflects on his recent visit to Iraqi Kurdistan during the promotion of his book “Peshmerga: A Remarkable Journey from Guerrilla to Soldier.”
During his visit, Rai toured frontline positions, including the Brigade 14 headquarters in Dibak and Peshmerga border posts in the Qarachogh mountains, observing the soldiers’ determination in combating remaining ISIS cells despite limited heavy weaponry.
Rai emphasises the strategic partnership between the Peshmerga and the United States, noting the Kurds’ critical role in past operations against Saddam Hussein and ISIS. He warns, however, that bilateral relations are at a pivotal point, citing concerns over U.S. withdrawal plans, Baghdad’s interference with funding, and limited supply of heavy weaponry to the Peshmerga.
The analyst calls on the U.S. to enhance support for the Kurds, including air defence systems, diplomatic backing, and heavy armaments, to ensure stability in the region. Rai concludes that the Peshmerga remain a key force in safeguarding Iraq and supporting U.S. interests in the Middle East.
