At the request of the President Jalal Talabani Foundation (PJTF), the Iraqi Prime Minister has approved the renaming of Sulaymaniyah International Airport to Jalal Talabani International Airport, in recognition of the late leader’s historic role in the Kurdish and Iraqi struggle.
Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Sabir, President of the PJTF, told PUKMEDIA: “After over four years of continuous effort, our goal has finally been achieved. President Mam Jalal, like the great leaders of other nations, deserves to be honoured in every possible way. Renaming Sulaymaniyah International Airport after him is a humble tribute to his enduring legacy and historic service.”
He explained that the decision has been officially communicated to the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority and all relevant institutions and airports across Iraq, with only a few legal formalities remaining before the change is formally implemented.
“Once the procedures are completed, a fitting ceremony will be held to mark the renaming of Sulaymaniyah International Airport to Jalal Talabani International Airport,” he said.
Dr. Sabir emphasised that this step symbolises gratitude for President Talabani’s lifelong struggle and service to both the Kurdish people and all Iraqis. “This decision ensures that Mam Jalal’s name will live on, just as airports in many countries bear the names of their presidents and national leaders.”
Sulaymaniyah International Airport, whose foundation stone was laid in November 2003, spans 13.5 square kilometres and serves as one of the Kurdistan Region’s key gateways to the world. The Airport was officially opened by President Mam Jalal on 20 July 2005. Several months after its opening, on 2 November 2005, the airport received international recognition and is currently administered by the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority.
The PJTF is an independent, non-profit, cultural, humanitarian, and national institution dedicated to documenting, preserving, and promoting the life, legacy, and contributions of President Jalal Talabani.
