The first phase of archaeological excavations at Sulaymaniyah Sara Building, which is located in Sulaymaniyah's down town area, has officially begun on Sunday, 14 September 2025, with Iraq’s First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed announcing the discovery of a historic in the area and calling for the area to be recognised as an archaeological site.

The launch of the excavation was attended by government officials and prominent figures.

In her speech at the ceremony, First Lady Ahmed said: "I was aware that there were historical sites at Sulaymaniyah Sara. While planting trees, some remains of pottery and the edge of a stone wall appeared, prompting me to request the Archaeological Directorate to commence excavations as soon as possible."

She noted that, due to delays, she asked Sulaymaniyah University to coordinate with archaeologists to expedite the work.

"I am pleased to announce that after 80 days and 820 hours of work, the Fatima Khan Bathhouse has been uncovered. This archaeological site, located behind the palace, holds significant historical importance from the period of the Baban rule," she added.

The First Lady explained that the bathhouse reportedly existed until 1954 before being demolished by the then Governor Omar Ali.

Emphasising the importance of preserving and protecting archaeological sites, the First Lady noted that such places embody the city’s history, authenticity and cultural richness. She recalled how, in the 1990s, Hero Ibrahim Ahmed intervened to prevent the demolition of the Sulaymaniyah Sara, safeguarding its legacy for future generations.

Historian Abdul Raqeeb Yousif confirmed that additional archaeological remains were identified in the Saray’s rear courtyard, leading to the suspension of market construction plans in order to preserve the sanctity of the site.

Following the ceremony, the First Lady toured the excavation area with attendees, reviewing completed work and examining plans for upcoming phases of exploration. The Saray, originally built during the Baban era and reconstructed in 1926, stands today as a two-story building comprising 43 rooms, representing a central landmark of Sulaymaniyah’s heritage.
