Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), welcomed Yann Braem, the French Consul General to the Kurdistan Region, at Dabashan.
The meeting, also attended by Dr Jwan Ihsan, a member of the PUK Political Bureau, addressed the latest political and security developments in the region. Both parties underlined the importance of continuing constructive dialogue among all sides to overcome current challenges and restore stability across the country.
A key point of discussion was the recent agreement between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the federal government regarding the payment of salaries to public sector employees in the Kurdistan Region. Both sides emphasised the need to resolve this issue in full accordance with the Iraqi Constitution and the rule of law.
President Talabani stated: “What has been achieved is the outcome of Kurdish unity and collective effort. The PUK is committed to preparing the ground for joint action and preserving a true partnership that guarantees the rights of all, especially the people of Kurdistan, so that they are no longer made to suffer. We view this as a core responsibility.”
Regarding the formation of a new cabinet, President Talabani added: “Our foremost goal is to establish the new government before the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections. We are working diligently to form a strong, service-driven administration that can strengthen our Region and deliver more to the people of Kurdistan. We are confident in our success — all in the public interest.”
For his part, Consul General Yann Braem praised President Talabani and the PUK for their efforts to bring parties together and for their constructive role in resolving the salary dispute. He reaffirmed France’s support for national dialogue and political cooperation in the Kurdistan Region.
