KRG PM: PUK Is a Key Political Party in the Kurdistan Region

KIU: PUK Has Played a Vital Role in Kurdistan’s Liberation Struggle for Fifty Years

The Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) has extended its warm congratulations to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee, marking the 50th anniversary of its founding.

Kosrat Rasul Ali: The PUK Has a Bright History and a Proud Legacy

Kosrat Rasul Ali has extended his warm congratulations on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the founding of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), praising the party's legacy of struggle, sacrifice, and achievement over the past 50 years.

In his message, he stated:

“I congratulate the families of the martyrs, the heroic Peshmerga, political prisoners, and all the fighters, members, and supporters of the PUK on the 50th anniversary of its establishment. I hope this milestone lays the foundation for continued success and the fulfilment of our shared aspirations.”

Reflecting on the party’s five-decade history, he continued: “Throughout 50 years of tireless struggle, the PUK sparked a new revolution with the blood of thousands of martyrs, the bravery of hundreds of Peshmerga fighters, and the dedication of committed leaders. From the high mountains to the Kurdish people’s uprising, the liberation of Kurdistan’s sacred land and the establishment of the Kurdistan Regional Government were the fruits of the PUK’s enduring fight.”

Reflecting on the PUK’s journey, Mrs. Glawezh congratulated the PUK and delivered a stirring tribute to the party’s legacy, highlighting its deep roots in resistance, national consciousness, and sacrifice.

Mrs. Galawezh's message said: 

“Fifty years of relentless struggle—through the mountains, in the cities, within the ranks of the Peshmerga, and across institutions and culture. The PUK has rightfully earned the title ‘Party of Martyrs’.

Founded by an elite group of Kurdish activists and revolutionaries under the leadership of the late President Mam Jalal, the PUK gave voice to an oppressed people and carried the banner of progressive nationalism. Just one year after its founding, the party’s youth were already engaged in battles of honour and resistance, guided by Mam Jalal and his comrades.

Over the years, waves of martyrs—individually and collectively—gave their lives for the cause. The people, nurtured by the party’s ideals, stood firm in the face of tyranny, creating new spaces for resistance across the cities and mountains alike.

The PUK’s legacy of sacrifice and struggle is too vast to be contained in the pages of history. On this anniversary, we must bow in respect to the souls of the martyrs, support their families, and honour the resilient people of Kurdistan. We salute Mam Jalal and his fellow revolutionaries with loyalty and deep appreciation.

On June 1, 1975, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan announced its founding and, from that day forward, ignited a revolutionary movement that has now marked half a century. On this historic day, we salute the spirit of the "Glory of the Nation," President Mam Jalal Talabani, and all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Kurdistan and its people.

From its very beginning, the PUK’s secret organisations in the cities and its brave Peshmerga forces in the mountains continued their struggle with determination. They played a pivotal role in the uprising that led to the expulsion of the Baathist fascist regime. As a result of this revolution, Kurdistan held its first parliamentary elections, and the Kurdistan Regional Government was established.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan is a heroic party, rich in sacrifice and remarkable in its achievements throughout Kurdistan. This anniversary is not only a proud and historic milestone but a glorious and significant occasion. The PUK is a party forged through struggle, shaped by adversity, and entrusted with historic missions. It is the party of heroism and leadership, having given 23,000 martyrs for the cause of the nation.

This commemoration honours thousands of brave fighters, visionary leaders, and a wise and devoted leader, President Mam Jalal, who dedicated his entire life to the service of his people. He became a symbol of unity and a stabilising force for both Iraq and Kurdistan, advocating for all segments of society throughout his life.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the Foreign Relations Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the PUK, acknowledging its pivotal role in Iraq’s development and regional stability.

In a formal message addressed to the Leadership Council of the PUK, the Chinese Communist Party praised the progress the party has achieved under the leadership of President Bafel Jalal Talabani. The message expressed China’s sincere wishes for continued success and advancement of the PUK in the economic and social growth of both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
