The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) congratulated journalists on the occasion of Kurdish Journalism Day, while reaffirming support for journalists who uphold accuracy, integrity, and responsible sourcing in their work, so that the space of freedom is expanded throughout Kurdistan.
It is noteworthy that every year, Kurdish journalists and people across Kurdistan celebrate Kurdish Journalism Day on 22 April to commemorate the publication of the first Kurdish newspaper, ‘Kurdistan’.
The PUK Politburo's message for Kurdish Journalism Day read:
On the occasion of the 127th anniversary of Kurdish journalism, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Kurdish journalists and the Kurdish media institutions for their contributions to the development of this vital field.
Despite enduring many challenging years under oppressive regimes, Kurdish journalism began to experience a notable expansion of freedoms following the 1991 uprising—a progress that, fortunately, continues to this day.
Since the time of the mountain struggle, the PUK has placed significant focus on safeguarding freedom of the press and supporting intellectuals, upholding the principle of “bread and freedom” as a core value. Following the 1991 uprising, and in line with the vision of President Mam Jalal, the PUK continued its efforts to promote press freedom, facilitating the establishment of the first private and independent newspapers and media institutions within areas under its influence.
On this occasion, we reaffirm our support for journalists who uphold accuracy, integrity, and responsible sourcing in their work. We emphasise that the space for free expression, political openness, and independent journalism across Kurdistan must remain protected and never be restricted by undue pressures or unjust actions.
Our nation deserves greater freedom, and it is freedom and democracy that form the pillars of our pride and the foundation of our standing in the international community.
Once again, Congratulations...
Political Bureau
