PUK President Meets Russian Envoy to Discuss Regional Affairs

Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) received a Russian delegation led by Mikhail Bogdanov, the Special Presidential Representative and Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister of Russia, in Erbil on Thursday, 6 February 2025.
In a meeting attended by Rafaat Abdullah, Dr. Hawre Sheikh Daro, members of the Political Bureau, Dara Khailany, Head of the PUK’s Foreign Relations Department, Lieutenant Colonel Omar Salih, Commander of the 70 Forces, and Pollo Shalaw Ali Askary, Head of Peshmerga Intelligence, the attendees reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations between both sides across all areas while safeguarding the highest interests.
President Bafel Jalal Talabani reiterated the PUK’s commitment to broadening cooperation and coordination to serve higher, shared goals. He stated, “The PUK supports all friendships and collaborations that benefit our country and promote stability in the surrounding region. Therefore, we aim to further develop the relationships President Mam Jalal established in all aspects and use them to strengthen our Region.”
The discussion also addressed political and military developments in the Middle East and Iraq, with a particular focus on Syria. The attendees emphasised the importance of maintaining security and peace in the surrounding region to resolve issues through dialogue. They stressed the need to adopt national mechanisms to overcome challenges and protect the rights of all. Specifically, in Syria and Western Kurdistan, it was highlighted that the will and rights of all nations and communities should be respected, with the protection of Kurdish rights, and ensuring they play a vital role in building the new Syria.
President Bafel outlined the PUK’s approach to all developments and matters, stating: “The goal of the PUK is to create a responsible vision focused on the peaceful resolution of problems and the establishment of balanced relations between all factions and parties, so that we can keep our country free from wars and conflicts.”
