The Head of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) Faction in the Turkish parliament remarked during a session that President Mam Jalal was regarded as the Mam (uncle) of the Kurds and was one of the most significant political figures in the Middle East.
Sirri Sakik, the Head of the DEM faction in the Turkish parliament, remarked during a session that coincided with the anniversary of President Mam Jalal's death: "Mam Jalal was regarded as the Mam (uncle) of the Kurds and one of the most significant political figures in the Middle East. He dedicated his life as a Peshmerga in the mountains of Kurdistan, fighting against oppression and fascism."
He added: “He then played a crucial role as Iraqi president and was a factor in fostering peace among all Iraqi factions and across the Middle East.”
Sakik further said: “In 1993, we successfully arranged a ceasefire in Syria for the first time, with Mam Jalal and Torgut Ozal as the key figures of this initiative. On this occasion, I would like to convey my respects and admiration for the souls of both individuals.”
Mam Jalal was the first Iraqi president and the Secretary-General of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. On 17th December 2012, he was sent to Germany for medical treatment due to his deteriorating health. Sadly, on 3rd October 2017, he suffered a heart attack and passed away.
