Brother of Martyred Journalist: "Guardians of Truth" Holds Deep Meaning

Brother of martyr Widad Hussein who was martyred in Duhok, visited the Guardians of Truth Monument in Sulaymaniyah and said: "The Guardians of Truth Monument is of great importance to the families of the martyred journalists and is a great honour for Sulaymaniyah."
Azad Hussein, brother of martyred journalist Widad Hussein, came to Sulaymaniyah from Duhok and said in a press conference at the monument of "Guardians of Truth": "Martyr Widad was abducted in the midst of the public in the Malta neighbourhood of Duhok and was later martyred."
He added: "We extend our gratitude to the person who developed this idea. Sulaymaniyah holds an important place in freedom, revolution, and culture. We hope that the voice of truth extend from Sulaymaniyah to everywhere else."
"The monument holds a deep meaning for the families of all 551 martyrs whose names are engraved here," he said.
Martyr journalist Widad Hussein is one of the 551 martyrs whose names are engraved on the Guardians of Truth Monument. He was abducted on August 13, 2016 in Duhok and was found with severe injures two hours after his kidnapping, on the road between Simele- Duhok. He died on the way to the hospital.

Azad Hussein, brother of martyred journalist Widad Hussein, told PUKMEDIA: "The monument honouring the guardians of truth is a great honour for Sulaymaniyah. It is a tribute to the journalists who have sacrificed their lives in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. It is praiseworthy for those who have implemented this splendid idea."
"Being the family of a martyred journalist, we are pleased to have a monument that vividly demonstrates that Sulaymaniyah is a city of cultural and unrestricted expression of opinions," Hussein stated.
On September 14, 2024, the "Guardians of Truth Monument" was unveiled in Sulaymaniyah. The names of all journalists martyred in the past 21 years are engraved on the monument which is placed close to the Platform of Freedom at Azadi Park in Sulaymaniyah. The monument is a homage to the memories of 551 journalists who have lost their lives in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region since 2003. The number also includes foreign journalists who were martyred in Iraq.
During the unveiling ceremony of the monument, Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, who came up with the idea of building the monument said: "The fallen journalists will remain immortals, while the legacy of their killers is one of lasting shame. We hope that no more names will ever need to be added to this monument."
