Kurdistan Erbil PUK CTG Peshmerga

A decade ago, the Peshmerga and the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG) forces of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) successfully freed Makhmur from the control of the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists. Additionally, they safeguarded Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, from being occupied. As a result, those who fled Erbil due to fear of ISIS have later returned.

On the attack's anniversary, the CTG said in a statement sent to PUKMEDIA: "Exactly a decade ago, just after the capture of Sinjar and the evacuation of the battlegrounds, certain regions were left vulnerable without any defence which paved the way for ISIS to take control. This posed a significant threat to Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region. The CTG soldiers acted as a formidable shield to safeguard the capital of the Kurdistan Region and as a powerful weapon against ISIS terrorists. They successfully liberated Makhmur from the terrorists in one and a half hours."

Adding: "As President Bafel Jalal Talabani said, a total of 88 CTG Peshmergas successfully liberated Makhmur. This marked the first defeat for the terrorist organisation which was at the hands of the CTG forces in Kurdistan, which occurred while the terrorist organisation was returning from defeating the armies of two countries."

"The CTG claims responsibility for the Kurdistan territory, from Zakho to Khanaqin, Kubashi to Kobanê. The force and its martyrs' serve as evidence for this fact," stated the CTG.

ISIS terrorists launched a violent attack on Makhmur district, just a few kilometers away from Erbil, on August 7, 2014, taking control of the area. On August 10, 2014, after 72 hours, the CTG forces, along with the Peshmerga and security forces of the PUK, successfully eliminated the terrorists from the Makhmur district in just one hour and 30 minutes.

Based on the published footages, the forces of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) had fled Makhmur, which posed a significant threat to the residents of Makhmur and Erbil. Consequently, the people of Erbil and Makhmur evacuated their houses out of fear for their safety.

Given the inadequate supervision of the forces overseeing the Makhmur front, it was anticipated that ISIS would occupy the area. However, the CTG forces took the initiative and entered Makhmur as the primary force. They fought ISIS, successfully liberated the district, and ensured the safety of Erbil.
