Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Yazidis' genocide on the hands of the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists, stating that the PUK's efforts to compensate the Yazidis continue.
The PUK Political Bureau's full message to the Yazidis said:
A decade has elapsed since the genocide of the Yezidis perpetrated by ISIS terrorists, an act that stands as the most egregious crime against humanity in the 21st century. This atrocity was directed towards the Yezidi people and their ancient civilisation in Sinjar and its surrounding region.
The ISIS's directive to carry out the genocide resulted in the deaths of thousands of Yazidis and the enslavement of hundreds of proud women and girls from our nation.
Regrettably, our Yazidi relatives were abandoned in the midst of the terrorist assault. The swift departure and disregard of the governing party KDP left only few chances for resistance and protection. At the onset of the tragedy, the PUK, although facing geographical distance and various challenges, established a defensive barrier with a limited number of personnel and in collaboration with its affiliated organisations in the area. This defensive line provided protection for the majority of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and victims.
Following the liberation of Sinjar as part of the countrywide war against ISIS terrorists, the PUK is persistently working within Kurdistan, Iraq, and internationally to fulfil the obligations of the Kurdistan Regional Government, the federal government, and the international community in this genocide case by rescuing survivors, providing compensation to the victims, and resolving political barriers to facilitate the safe and honorable return of the IDPs and victims of the disaster.
As a responsible Kurdish force, we assert our moral responsibility for the national, patriotic, and humanitarian issue of our people in Sinjar. We emphasise the need of preserving the identity of the Yazidis as an indigenous and thriving Kurdish community.
The observance of this national grief coincides with the traditional Peak of Summer Holiday of the Yazidis, which serves as a symbol of the enduring nature of life, the perseverance in the face of adversity, and the determination to endure and triumph.
May the souls of the martyrs and victims of the Sinjar massacre, as well as all the victims and martyrs of the Kurdish and Iraqi people, rest in peace.
