The United States (U.S.) Consulate General in Erbil issued a message on the occasion of Kurdish Journalism Day, saying: "We will continue to support media freedom, fair and professional news coverage, neutrality, and access to information in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region."

Today, on April 24, 2024, marks the 126th anniversary of the publication of the first Kurdish newspaper, Kurdistan. This historic newspaper was initially published on April 22, 1898 by Miqdad Madhat Badirkhan. April 24 is officially recognized as Kurdish Journalism day. 

The U.S. Consulate said in its message for Kurdish Journalism Day:

"The On Kurdish Press Day, we honor Kurdish media on this occasion. President Biden stated “We must all continue to support a free press that is essential to our democracy and democracies everywhere.” 

We will continue to support media freedom, fair and professional news coverage, neutrality, and access to information in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, and we honor the work of those journalists working in dangerous environments, and thank them for bringing the truth to us. 

Journalists should be able to work without fear of politically motivated intimidation, harassment, or arbitrary detention."
