The foundation stone for the Halabja Gate was laid in response to a request from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) faction in Baghdad. The Iraqi prime minister decided to cover the costs.

Chro Hama Sharif, a member of the PUK faction in the Iraqi parliament representing Halabja province, told PUKMEDIA: "Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani has decided to allocate 1 billion dinars for Halabja province at my request as a member of the PUK faction and with the support of Dr. Khalid Shwani, the Iraqi Justice Minister."

"We are making this request in order to serve the residents of Halabja, particularly as we approach the anniversary of the chemical attack on Halabja, and the funding has been provided for a project in Halabja province," she added.

PUK representatives in Baghdad have invited the Iraqi president, prime minister, speaker of parliament, and Iraqi party leaders to visit Halabja in commemoration of the city's chemical attack.

"Unlike previous years, we will commemorate the tragedy this year by formally laying the cornerstone of a major project at the city's entrance," she continued. This gesture is a response to the people of Halabja's desire for tangible progress rather than mere symbolic actions and promises."

Chro continued, "We conferred with the governor, deputies, and mayor of the city before deciding to use the funds that the Iraqi prime minister granted the city for the Halabja Gate project."

On March 16, 2024, the 36th anniversary of the Halabja chemical attack will be observed. This year, the Iraqi Prime Minister approved a project in the city worth 1 billion dinars, as requested by the PUK faction in Baghdad. On March 14, 2024, the ceremonial act of laying the foundation stone for the project occurred.
