Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid attended the celebration of the Iraqi Parliament's centenary on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
In his speech, President Rashid said the occasion should evoke pride in Iraq’s great political legacy. He also called for expediting the appointment of a new parliament Speaker in order to legislate laws that serve the nation and the citizen.
“Anyone who follows Iraq’s contemporary political history will find that Iraq was among the first countries of the region to establish a constitution. This pioneering constitution served to safeguard democratic principles and guarantee rights and freedoms,” he said.
President Rashid added: “Modern Iraq emerged from an era of totalitariaism, after the Iraqi people refused to live under oppression and repudiated tyranny by rising up.”
He noted that several uprisings and sacrifices led to a democratic system embodied in the Constitution of 2005.
