On February 1, 2004, two terrorists entered the city of Erbil and strategically attacked two separate political buildings.

Exactly twenty years ago, a heinous crime was committed against the Kurds and the residents of Erbil. Al-Qaeda terrorists carried out two suicide attacks at once at the 3rd headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Erbil and the 2nd branch of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

The two suicide explosions that took place in Erbil on February 1, 2004, coincided with the first day of Eid al-Adha. A total of 105 fatalities occurred in both the PUK and KDP headquarters.

Since the tragedy happened on the first day of Eid al-Adha, when people all over the world were celebrating tolerance, the terrorist attack that targeted the PUK and KDP headquarters shocked the Kurdish people as a whole.

On that day, the residents of Erbil, encompassing all levels of society, gathered at the different buildings to celebrate the sacred occasion. During that instance, the terrorists ruthlessly targeted the crowd, resulting in the shedding of blood from several leaders, cadres, Peshmergas, and civilians.
