Qubad Talabani, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, held a meeting with Anu Saarela, the newly appointed Finnish Ambassador to Iraq, to address several matters of shared importance.
During the meeting on Monday, December 15, 2024, in Erbil, Qubad Talabani extended congratulations to Anu Saarela for her recent appointment as the new Finnish Ambassador to Iraq and expressed his well wishes for her success in fulfilling her responsibilities.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the Finnish government for its aid to the Kurdistan Region in recent years, particularly in the context of combatting the Islamic State (ISIS).
During a different part of the discussion, the issue of women's status in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq was addressed, and all parties concurred that additional efforts should be undertaken to guarantee women's enhanced involvement in politics and societal governance.
Within this framework, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed his commitment to enhancing the status of women in politics, the market, and civil society. He urged Finland to support the Kurdistan Region in this endeavor, particularly in the area of women's empowerment.
The discussion also addressed the issue of illegal migration, and both parties reached a consensus that the international community, as well as the governments of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, should collaborate in order to mitigate the occurrence of illegal migration.
