According to a statement from the British Home Office, a copy of which was sent to PUKMEDIA, the purpose of British Security Minister Tom Tugendhat's visit to Iraq was to strengthen collaboration in combating serious and organized crime, narcotics, and terrorism.

Minister Tugendhat visited Iraq and the Kurdistan Region from August 21 to 23, 2023, to strengthen bilateral relations while also enhancing security in the United Kingdom, Iraq, and the surrounding region.

According to a statement from the Home Office, "the UK has trained 111,000 members of the Iraqi Security Forces, including 21,000 Kurdish Peshmerga."

During his visit, the Minister worked with the Iraqi and Kurdistan Regional Governments to advance negotiations for a new agreement. Both countries will soon sign a Statement of Intent to Combat Common Dangers from Organized Crime.

The security minister also highlighted the UK's ongoing commitment to eliminating the threat that ISIS poses and making sure that it never again endangers the security of the UK and Iraq, including by promoting the adoption of the Yazidi Survivors Law, which compensates victims of ISIS-committed genocide.
