The spokesman of the Sulaimani Tourism Directorate announced on Wednesday that over 100,000 tourists visited the tourist destinations of Slemani during the Eid holidays.

Aram Shwan, the spokesperson for the Slemani Tourism Directorate, told PUKmedia that more than 110,000 tourists visited Slemani in the past six days, pointing out that the number is expected to increase to 125,000 in the coming days.

He added that most of the tourists are from central and southern Iraq and from East Kurdistan or Iranian Kurdistan.

"It is estimated that tourists have spent more than $ 20 million in the governorate," Shwan said.

According to Shwan, the number of tourists increased compared to last year as last year, 85,000 tourists visited the governorate during Eid al-Adha, but this year the number increased by 50,000 tourists.

Due to its cooler temperature compared to the rest of Iraq, hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to the Kurdistan Region around the time of the holidays annually, mostly from southern and central governorates.

Tourism has been the focus of the Kurdistan Regional Government and a booming sector in the Kurdistan Region in recent years. It was hit by the coronavirus in 2020, but it slowly began to revive last year.

Millions of tourists have visited the Region since 2021 with over 3.1 million arriving in just the first half of this year.
