A man killed his wife in the Bardarash district of Duhok Governorate on Monday early hours.

"A man killed his 30-year-old wife whose a mother of 5 children in the village of Nazrawa in Bardarash late last night," police spokesman Hemn Sulaiman announced on Monday.

According to Sulaiman, the two spouses had a dispute before the incident.

So-called honor killings, domestic violence, sex, and gender-based violence remain on the rise in the Kurdistan Region’s patriarchal and conservative community. The issues are usually settled by tribal agreements and judicial codes when committed in families run by tribalism, often involving a large sum of money given as compensation for taking someone’s soul.

According to the statistics of the Kurdistan Region's Directorate of Violence Against Women, The Kurdistan Region saw a great increase in femicide as 19 women were killed in the past four months, four of them in Duhok province.

Twenty-four women were killed in the Kurdistan Region last year, according to statistics from the Directorate of Combatting Violence against Women.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) passed the Combating Domestic Violence Law in 2011, but the phenomenon and the so-called honor killings are still witnessed across the Region.

A woman, originally from Zakho, was stabbed by one of her brothers 28 times in Erbil late Monday over a dispute dating back to 2014. Another survived a stabbing attack by her husband in Slemani in early May.
