On Tuesday night, Slemani security forces arrested the defendant who stabbed his wife 12 times.

Last Saturday, a man in Slemani attacked his wife after a dispute and stabbed her with a knife 12 times which caused her severe injuries but survived.

Raz Fryad, the spokesperson for the Directorate of Combating Domestic Violence and Violence against Women in Slemani, confirmed the arrest of the accused to PUKmedia.

The Gender Department at the office of the Deputy PM of the Kurdistan Region, Qubad Talabani, thanked the security forces of the Kurdistan Region for arresting the two men who killed their wives in Erbil and Duhok, as well as Slemani security forces for arresting this man.

"Qubad Talabani said a few days ago: I want to say a word from my heart to the murderers of women. I promise that as long as I am in this position and wherever I have authority, I will not allow you to escape from the law. You must be punished, and you will be arrested wherever you are. Take this from me: I promise I won't let you sleep calmly. We will treat you like an ISIS terrorist," Ashti Abdulla, head of the Gender Department, said in a press conference.

The Gender Department had previously adopted the injured woman's case pledging to follow up with her until the defendant receives fair punishment.

So-called honor killings, domestic violence, sex, and gender-based violence remain on the rise in the Kurdistan Region’s patriarchal and conservative community. The issues are usually settled by tribal agreements and judicial codes when committed in families run by tribalism, often involving a large sum of money given as compensation for taking someone’s soul.

Last Tuesday, a man strangled his wife to death with a wire in Duhok and surrendered to the police. Before that, another woman was allegedly killed by her husband in Erbil province on Monday with the suspect arrested shortly after.

At least 11 women were killed across the Region in the first two months of the year.
