A delegation from the office of Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), visited Shar Hospital in the city of Slemani to check the health conditions of the woman whose husband had assaulted her.

A man attacked his wife and stabbed her several times with a knife in Slemani, which caused her severe injuries.

Ashti Abdullah, head of the Gender Department in the office of the Deputy PM of the KRG, said during a televised statement: "We support this woman, who was assaulted by her husband, and we will follow up on this case until the arrest of the suspect and referring him to the judiciary to receive his just punishment."

"We are in constant contact with the security forces to arrest the accused, and we were briefed today on the health of this woman... we assured her of the support of the Deputy PM," she added.

For their part, the victim's family expressed their thanks to the Deputy PM and called for expediting the arrest of the accused and referring him to the judiciary to get a just punishment.

So-called honor killings, domestic violence, sex, and gender-based violence remain on the rise in the Kurdistan Region’s patriarchal and conservative community. The issues are usually settled by tribal agreements and judicial codes when committed in families run by tribalism, often involving a large sum of money given as compensation for taking someone’s soul.

Small family disputes can rapidly escalate into violent events, leading to shootings and murders across the Kurdistan Region where gun violence remains widespread.

A man shot dead his wife and three of her family members over the so-called 'Social Dispute' in the early hours of the first day of Eid al-Fitr in the Chamchamal town of Slemani Governorate.

Right after the incident, Qubad Talabani assigned the security forces to arrest the criminal along with everyone involved in the case as soon as possible. Hours later the suspect was arrested.
