Kurdistan 06:10 PM - 2022-04-27

On Wednesday, the peacock Angel (Tawûsgeran) ritual was held for the people of the Yazidi component in the Shekhan district and the surrounding areas, after stopping for 10 years.

These festivals are held at least twice during the year in all villages, cities, and towns of Kurdistan and Iraq, where Qewals and other religious dignitaries visit Yazidi villages, bringing the sinjaq, sacred images of a peacock symbolizing Tawûsê Melek. These are venerated, fees are collected from the pious, sermons are preached and holy water and berat (small stones from Lalish) distributed.

This comes 10 years after ISIS attacked Sinjar, Bashiqa, and many other Yezidi areas, This year, the Yezidi spiritual and clerical leader decided to hold the ceremony.
