Slemani Asayish, Iraqi Counter-Terrorism thwart plan to carry out terrorist operations during Ramadan

Iraq's Counter-Terrorism Service in cooperation with the Asayish of Slemani foiled a plan to carry out terrorist operations in Kirkuk during the holy month of Ramadan, the spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of Iraq's Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasoul, announced on Tuesday.

A statement by the Office of the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces said that the Counter-Terrorism Service, in coordination with the Asayish of Kurdistan Region - the General Directorate of Asayish in Slemani thwarted a plan by the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist gangs to carry out a suicide bombing during the holy month of Ramadan.

He also pointed out that two Iraqi suicide bombers were arrested, in addition to the transporter who has an Iraqi nationality, inside Kirkuk governorate, noting that the arrest was carried out through monitoring and follow-up operations in Kirkuk.

Although Iraq has announced a military victory over ISIS in 2017 after 3 years of battle with the terrorists. However, remnants of the group continue to pose threats, especially in areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad. 

ISIS militants ambush, kidnap, and extort both civilians and members of the security forces in the disputed areas, which stretch across several provinces, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Saladin.

Security forces carry out frequent operations to completely eliminate the terrorists in the country.
