The US State Department announced that the Iraqi Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance, Taif Sami, won the International Women of Courage Award.

In its sixteenth edition, the list of winners included 12 women and Taif Sami Muhammad, who took the position of Deputy Minister of Finance in 2019 and at the same time holds the position of Director-General of the Budget.

Mrs. Mohammed has worked in the Ministry of Finance for 36 years and started as a budget analyst in 1985 and made her way to the position of Deputy Director-General of the Budget Department in 2005, and then took the position of General Manager of the Budget Department.

According to a statement by the US State Department, she also played a key role in preventing and deterring budget corruption in Iraq.

International Women of Courage Award is given to women around the world who have made sacrifices and have demonstrated courage, strength, and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, and human rights as well as gender equity, equality, and the empowerment of women and girls.

Since March 2007, the US Department has honored more than 170 women from more than 80 countries with the International Women of Courage Award. US diplomatic missions abroad nominate one woman of courage from their respective host countries, and senior Department officials select and approve the finalists.

After the ceremony, the winners will participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) virtually to connect with their American counterparts and strengthen the global network of women leaders.
