On Wednesday, Shinyar Hunar, the woman who was burned by her husband, died after staying at the hospital for 5 days.

Shinyar Hunar, 21, and a mother of two was reportedly burnt by her husband early Saturday.

In the past five days, Hunar was in critical condition as 85 percent of her body was severely burned.

According to police statements, the husband, 25, had poured the heater's kerosene on her while at their house and set her ablaze, after which he fled to the border to hide.

The Slemani Police arrested the husband on Sunday as he was attempting to flee, and they are still investigating the case.

The Gender Department of Qubad Talabani's Office promised to support the case of Shinyar Hunar.

"We consider Shnyar Hunar's case ours, and we are ready to provide any help," Ashti Abdullah, head of the Gender Department at Qubad Talabani (Deputy PM of KRG)'s Office, told a press conference.

The Kurdistan Region suffers from high rates of gender-based violence. This incident comes just four days after Maryam Yacoob was shot dead by her husband in Slemani, reportedly after asking her husband for a divorce.

The husband also shot himself shortly afterward leaving one child behind.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in 2011 passed the Combating Domestic Violence Law, but the practice of domestic abuse and the so-called honor killings is still seen across the Region.

Twenty-four women were killed in the Kurdistan Region last year, according to statistics from the Directorate of Combatting Violence against Women.
