The Gender Department of Qubad Talabani's Office will be supporting the case of the woman who was set ablaze by he husband in Slemani.

"We consider Shnyar Hunar's case ours and we are ready to provide any help," Ashti Abdullah, head of the Gender Department at Qubad Talabani (Deputy PM of KRG)'s Office, told a press conference.

"We appreciate the efforts of the security agencies and the Slemani police who managed to arrest the perpetrator in a short period, and the Slemani police chief is in constant communication with the deputy PM for the case to take its legal course," she added.

Shnyar Hunar, 21, and a mother of two was reportedly burnt by her husband early Saturday. She is currently in critical condition as 85 percent of her body has been severely burned.

The Slemani's Police arrested the husband on Sunday as he was attempting to flee.

According to police statements, the husband, 25, had poured the heater's kerosene on her while at their house and set her ablaze, after which he fled to the border to hide.

The Kurdistan Region suffers from high rates of gender-based violence. This incident comes just four days after Maryam Yacoob was shot dead by her husband in Slemani, reportedly after asking her husband for a divorce.

The husband also shot himself shortly afterward leaving one child behind.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in 2011 passed the Combating Domestic Violence Law, but the practice of domestic abuse and the so-called honor killings is still seen across the Region.

Twenty-four women were killed in the Kurdistan Region last year, according to statistics from the Directorate of Combatting Violence against Women.
