Qubad Talabani, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, on Thursday confirmed that the appointment of a woman to the position of Mayor of Slemani is a matter of pride.
Talabani said in a Facebook post, "for the first time, since Slemani was founded, a woman became the city's mayor!"
"This event may seem normal to some, but for me it is a matter of pride for a woman to assume this position during our work period," he added.
Qubad Talabani continued, "we pledge to work seriously and jointly to provide better services and prevent abuse and violations within the borders of the Slemani municipality," stressing that he will spare no effort to help women to reach high positions.
Laila Omar Ali began her work as the Mayor of Slemani on Thursday and is the first woman to assume this position.
Laila Omar was born in 1975 and is a reserve member of the leadership council of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. On January 31, 2021, she held the position of Deputy Governor of Slemani for Administrative Affairs and was the first woman to occupy this position, and before that, she held the position of Director of the Register Department.
It is noteworthy that since 1980 Slemani held more than 50 people as the head of the municipality, but Laila Omar is the first woman to occupy this position in the history of the governorate
