Slemani hosts conference on crimes against women

On Tuesday, a conference was held in Slemani for publishing researches on violence against women and  honor killing in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

The conference began with a minute of silence to mourn the souls of women who were killed under the pretext of honor.

In the beginning of the conference, Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Rewaz Faiq said, "we in the Kurdistan Region have a share in the issue of honor killing."

"The late President Mam Jalal was working to eradicate the phenomenon of killing women in the Kurdistan Region and he was continually holding meetings with all clan heads regarding this issue," she added. 

She continued, "the Parliament of Kurdistan has several times informed the women's organizations to send their proposals to amend the law to protect women from violence, but these organizations have not responded yet," calling on the judiciary and the police to take a serious stand against this phenomenon. 

For his part, Sarkawt Ahmed, Director of the Department of Combating Violence against Women, told PUKmedia, "Slemani governorate witnessed 7 killings of women during the past year, and all the perpetrators were arrested."

He also assured the citizens that they are working to protect women who have been subjected to violence.
