PUK MP: We will work on enacting laws that do justice to Iraqi women

A member of Iraq's Parliament from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) stressed the need for female deputies to work to improve the status of Iraqi women.

MP Srwa Miran told PUKmedia on Wednesday that the number of women members of the new Parliament has increased compared to the previous legislative term," noting that women MPs should take advantage of this opportunity to improve the conditions of women in Iraq, pointing out that Women in Iraq have many problems after the successive wars in Iraq, like the war against ISIS that left many widows and orphans.

"As members of the parliament, we must be united as women and participate in the sessions effectively and work to present draft laws that contribute to improving women's conditions and their lives, and we will work in this direction," MP Srwa Miran added, noting that the female MPs of the PUK will work with women from other blocs, preparing an action plan for women's equity and enacting laws that solve their problems and help improve the reality of Iraqi women

It is noteworthy that the Independent High Electoral Commission announced statistics for the 2021 elections, where it indicated that 95 female candidates won seats in the Council of Representatives.

According to the commission's statistics, 946 women ran in the elections along to 2,279 men, and the number of votes obtained by women candidates reached 917,601 votes, while 3,149,326 votes were for the winning male candidates. 

The Iraqi constitution stipulates in Article No. (49/4) that women shall have a quota of 25% of the members of the Council of Representatives.
