Migration Ministry to PUKmedia: Closing Shingal camp requires rehabilitation of the IDPs original areas

Reports 04:35 PM - 2021-12-18

The Kurdistan Region calls for the closure of the camps, but only after creating suitable conditions for the return of families, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displaced.

On Saturday, the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displaced confirmed the closure of all IDP camps in Iraq, except for the camps in the Kurdistan Region.

The ministry's spokesman, Ali Abbas, said in an exclusive statement to PUKmedia that the Kurdistan Region calls for the closure of the camps, but only after creating suitable conditions for the return of families, explaining that some camps need coordination and cooperation between the Iraqi governments and the Kurdistan Region, such as "Khazar and Hassan Sham."

He added that the closure of Shingal camp (hosts Yazidi IDPs who fled ISIS massacre in 2014) requires rehabilitating the IDPs areas and providing more services for the return of the displaced, noting that the ministry has provided an amount of 1 million dinars (about 650$) for the families to return to their areas of origin.

He also indicated that all the IDP camps have been closed in Iraq, except for the camps in the Kurdistan Region, pointing out that international organizations will withdraw support for the camps during 2022 due to the lack of funding.

Over 6 million people were displaced in Iraq after the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists occupied one-third of the country in 2014 until 2017.

The Yazidi Kurds took the biggest blow as the terrorists killed hundreds of their men, raped and enslaved their women, and forcibly recruited children as fighters.
