The Iraqi Ministry of Communications announced on Wednesday that it had obtained approvals to launch the first Iraqi satellite into space.

Communications Minister Arkan Al-Shaibani said in at the second Iraqi cybersecurity conference on Wednesday, that "Iraq will soon launch the first Iraqi satellite in Iraqi airspace."

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Communications announced the importance of the Iraqi satellite, in terms of Iraqi satellite channels and radio frequencies, in addition to the advanced and modern technological services that serve the ministry.

Iraq previously claimed to have launched a satellite in 1989 during the Baath rule, however, this was discredited after footage of the rocket exploding during first stage flight surfaced. Analysts have also determined that it was unlikely to have been an orbital launch attempt in any case.

A satellite is an object that has been intentionally placed into orbit. These objects are called artificial satellites to distinguish them from natural satellites such as Earth's Moon.

Among several other applications, satellites can be used to make star maps and maps of planetary surfaces, and also take pictures of planets they are launched into.
