The Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi is scheduled to visit Kuwait this week, while a political analyst stresses the importance of these visits to enhance Iraq's stance in the region.

Iraq's Ambassador to Kuwait Manhal Al-Safi met with the Chairman of the Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry Muhammad Jassem Al-Saqer, according to a statement by the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The visit aims to develop economic ties with Kuwait as the two sides held a meeting with Kuwaiti businessmen to include Kuwaiti investors in the Iraqi commercial market and play an active role in sustainable development and industrial and commercial investment.

For his part, political analyst Ali Al-Baydar said in a statement to PUKmedia, that "the Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi’s travels at the regional and international levels indicate that he is trying to move towards the Gulf countries, including Kuwait, which he sees as perhaps a savior for Iraq."

Kuwait is the third Gulf country for Al-Kadhimi to visit since he became prime minister. He had previously visited the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

"These visits have an economic dimension and enhance Iraq's stance with those countries," Al-Baydar said.

In recent years, Iraqi-Kuwaiti ties have improved after years of strains due to Saddam Hussein’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

Iraq is also set to host a regional conference later this month for neighboring countries aimed to defuse tensions in the region.

Iraq is seeking to rebuild its economy exhausted by the Islamic State's sweep into the country in 2014 and years of corruption within state institutions.
