The exhumation of the remains of the martyrs from the mass grave found in the Sheikhiya area in the Samawah desert, Muthanna province ended today Saturday, August 3, 2019.

 

In a statement, Fuad Osman, spokesman for the Ministry of Martyrs and Anfal Affairs in the Kurdistan Regional Government, told PUKmedia: The exhumation of the remains of martyrs from the first mass grave in the Sheikhiya area in the desert of Samawa ended today Saturday, and the remains of 171 martyrs were extracted from the mass grave.

 

He added: After the holiday of Eid al-Adha, the work of exhuming the remains of the rest of the martyrs of the second and third mass graves in the desert of Samawah will begin.

 

He added: After the opening of the mass graves, the remains of the martyrs will be transferred to the Department of Forensic Medicine in Baghdad to take samples (D.N.A) of them and then the remains of the martyrs will be returned to Kurdistan Region in mass public ceremonies.

 

The spokesman for the Ministry of Martyrs Affairs said that there were other mass graves found in the Samawa desert, including the remains of Kurd martyrs executed during the reign of the former Ba’athist regime.
