On Sunday, the Iraqi Martyrs Foundation announced the discovery of a mass grave in a site between the districts of Kifri - Khanaqin, in Diyala Governorate.
A statement by the Foundation stated that new information provided by one of the families of the martyrs from the residents of Kifri - Khanaqin led to the discovery of the grave and it belongs to the victims of the fallen regime, indicating that the initial information indicates that the grave is very large in terms of the number of victims.
The Foundation said that the Mass Graves Department will work, in coordination with the Department of Martyrs of Victims of Baath Crimes, upon receipt of the report and testimony, to conduct a technical assessment of the cemetery's location and then follow the procedures stipulated under Law No. 13 of 2015 on Affairs and Protection of Mass Graves and the committee formed under Article 6 of it.
Between 1986 and 1989, the fallen Baath regime of of Saddam Hussein undertook a campaign of genocide against the Kurds to the north. Spearheaded by the infamous Ali Hassan al-Majid, also known as "Chemical Ali" for conducting the Halabja deadly chemical bombardment. The operation saw the deaths of up to 182,000 ethnic Kurds.
Many were forcibly displaced to other parts of the country and held in specialized camps before being summarily executed and buried in large groups. Nigret Salman is one such site.
Since the fall of the Baathist regime in 2003, many mass graves filled with Anfal victims have been exhumed in various locations throughout Iraq.
