In a statement on Wednesday the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) welcomed the rebuilding of Shariya camp, where a fire broke out on June 4th.

In a statement, UNHCR said, "UNHCR, which leads the Camp Coordination/Camp Management and Shelter Clusters in Iraq, welcomes the Government's to allow the construction of semi-upgraded shelters in camps for displaced persons in Duhok Governorate the decision represents a longer-term response to the large fire in Shariya IDP camp on 4 June and will not only reduce risks of fire but is a positive step in terms of protection: dignity, safety, and privacy for each individual family."

The statement added, "The shelter upgrade has always been a calling for UNHCR and humanitarian partners, as a transitional solution so that these families can return to their homes in a voluntary, safe and dignified manner. UNHCR and humanitarian partners will work closely with the government, camp management and the community for the purpose of appropriate developments for these shelters. The decision complements the immediate response of the government, camp management and humanitarian partners to the fire that broke out on June 4. In the immediate aftermath of this fire, UNHCR and its partners contributed tents, essential relief materials, fire extinguishers and other protection and assistance services to the affected population.”

"UNHCR will also continue its long-term fire prevention activities, including the provision of fire extinguishers and risk education and mitigation activities, in coordination and support to camp management and civil defense authorities in the camps. We would also like to urge donor countries to contribute to meeting the urgent need for shelter so that families can IDPs living in Shariya camp and other camps can live in peace of mind, protected from dangers until they can return to their normal lives.”
