Five Kurdish Peshmerga elements were killed in an anonymous attack on Duhok's Matin mountain while the KRG's Peshmerga Ministry said that the attack was carried out by the PKK.

The Ministry of Peshmerga in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) issued a statement on Saturday regarding the attack that took place in the borders of Amedi district of Duhok governorate.

"A force of the Peshmerga was subjected to an armed attack by elements of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), while carrying out its duties to restore security, stability and protect citizens in the villages located in Mount Matin in the Amidi district," said the Peshmerga Ministry.

"The attack resulted in the death of 5 members of the Peshmerga forces and the injury of 4 others," it added, explaining: "We had previously warned of the risks of such incidents."

The statement called on all parties to respect the borders of the Kurdistan Region and not to endanger security and stability in the Kurdistan Region.

The PKK affiliated website ANF reported that forces acting on behalf of Iraq and the KDP attacked a camp of the guerrilla forces. Guerrillas fired warning shots to prevent them from advancing any further.

The Matin mountain is a hot spot for Turkey and PKK conflicts. The Turkish army began military operations inside the Kurdistan Region more than 40 days ago. The Turkish army's operations in Duhok's Mount Metin continue despite local and official appeals to Ankara to stop its aggression, which resulted in civilian casualties and emptying dozens of villages of their residents. read more
